Hannah Solar, LLC completed the design and installation of a roof mount solar array on the Bernhardt Furniture Facility in Lenoir, NC in 2015. The project, with a combined energy of 1.4 MW, provides Bernhardt with renewable energy credits as a result of the solar power generated and helps the facility offset its emissions and total carbon footprint.
Eddie Pitts, Corporate and Environmental Manager for Bernhardt Furniture, stated that there was no problem facing the company regarding solar projects. “The biggest hurdle was getting through Duke Energy’s project queue. We initially wanted to push 5 projects through but based on Duke’s interconnection prestudy, only the one was suitable.”
Bernhardt is now seeing a monthly check from Duke Energy. The solar system provides enough power to offset the total carbon footprint of the building and is therefore better for the environment.
“We liked the idea of contributing to the nation’s renewable energy portfolio,” said Pitts. “Solar was our only criteria…we are in the southern US with a lot of solar radiation. Also, we had lots of potential real estate that could double as a renewable power source, which operates as a separate business unit and is already profitable.”
Unique by today’s standards, Bernhardt remains a family-owned business that is dedicated to the welfare of the community that’s been its home since 1889. Now led by the fourth generation, Bernhardt remains deeply committed to the values upon which they were founded: high business standards, the artistry of furniture making, the generations of artisans who form the bedrock of their company, and the welfare of their local community.
